Ok Rider fans. You have to feel just a little bit sorry for the Ottawa RedBlacks. Henry Burris played probably the best game I have seen him play. He threw for three touchdowns. He led his team.
The brooms were out. It looked like there was going to be an East Division sweep but then…there was Weston Dressler with a 78 yard punt return for a touch down and the most amazing 60 yard touch down run that we have seen in years. Sure skeptics will say the Ottawa tackling was pretty bad but watch Dressler work his magic. He made people miss and went into the end zone for a major score.
Then when it looked like the poor old RedBlacks would leave Mosiac Stadium with at least a tie, Brian Peters blocks a Maher field goal and the Riders go home with a 35 - 32 overtime victory and move their record to nine wins and three losses.
And then there was coach Cory Chamblin's inspirational speech to the TSN reporters at half time.
In essence it went something like this…" We are getting are asses kicked at home and if it doesn't get turned around, there are going to be some guys looking for jobs" If he was that dramatic on National television, wouldn't you have loved to hear what he had to say in the dressing room. Whatever it was the Riders got the job done. And as much as it pains me to admit it, they got some help from those pathetic referees in the striped shirts. How they missed a contacting the kicker call on Maher is beyond anyone's imagination. And then to really make it hurt Dressler takes the punt and returns it 70 plus yards for a touchdown.
What should have been a penalty with Ottawa getting the ball back turns into a scoring play for the Riders. Can hardly wait to hear the CFL head office explain that one. Maher's leg was in the air, I believe it was Ford clearly runs into him. Penalty right? Nope not in the CFL where the referee's either can't see or they make things up as they go along. Remember the grabbed face mask of Tino Sunseri in the Hamilton game a week ago? They didn't see that one either.
"I've been part of some crazy ones," said defensive Ricky Foley. "Super crazy game man, if you had describe the CFL to somebody, you had to show them a game to describe what it's all about, just show them the last 10 minutes of this game."
Someone posted that I forgot to mention Tearrius George and his contributions. Right you are..The Riders defensive stalwart was a star with three quarterback sacks and five tackles. George constantly had pressure on Burris even though Burris did a pretty decent job of scrambling away from the pursuit
Elsewhere in the Canadian Football League this weekend a huge weekend for the East Division which must have Commissioner Mark Cohon smiling ear to ear.
In the biggest upset of the weekend
Montreal Alouettes 31 Calgary Stampeders 15
Heard a lot of whining about Stampeder injuries and to be sure they have them but so does every other team in the league. So suck it up Calgary it could be worse.
Hamilton Tiger Cats 25 Edmonton Eskimos 23
Toronto Argonauts 40 British Columbia Lions 23
So now the Riders, without Darian Durant in case you forgot about that, have five or the final six games against either Calgary or Edmonton. That is going to decide a lot about the outcome of this years final standings. But the game against Ottawa was one you do not want to lose and the Riders prevailed and are looking pretty good for the final run.
