Shrouded in secrecy, the veil has been lifted for all the world to see and the Saskatchewan RoughRiders have named their starting quarterback for Friday's game against the Calgary Stampeders.
It will be Seth Doege getting the call over Tino Sunseri who started the last three games, two of them losses and didn't look good in doing so.
It all came to a head in Edmonton when the Eskimos rolled over the Riders by a 24 - 0 score. Sunseri played the first half completing only five passes for 53 yards. Doege didn't fare much better but apparently the Rider brass has spotted something about Doege that has given them a glimmer of hope.
So far Doege is best know for this exciting run earlier in the season that left Taj Smith and others gasping.
There has been a lot of speculation over who would get the starting assignment now that all the talk of Henry Burris coming to town has evaporated. Smiling Hank will stay in Ottawa after the RedBlacks knowing that the Riders were missing Darian's arm apparently wanted a leg thrown into the deal as well. It's speculated that Ottawa wanted Chris Getzlaf, and one of the Riders offensive lineman.
Too steep a price for the Riders to pay and now those greedy RedBlacks will have to finish out their season with just one win. Somehow you have to think they deserve that after their treatment of Kevin Glenn and now trying to rob blind the down but not totally out of it RoughRiders.
When you think about it…does it really matter who starts against Calgary. The Stampeders are 11 & 2.
They have the best running game in the country with Jon Cornish. After the Riders gave up almost 200 yards to John White you have to just kind of shudder when you think what Cornish is capable of doing.
Regardless of who the quarterback is the Riders will have to have a total team effort in able to beat Calgary. The defence will have to play shut down defence, the running game, that has all but disappeared will have to re establish itself, the special teams will have to be really special and the kicking game will have to produce points.
Meanwhile on the Darian Durant front a tweet from Kory Sheets indicated that Durant will be back and playing on October 24th. That sounds pretty unlikely given the nature of a torn tendon in the elbow of Durant's throwing arm. However if true then the Riders could be right back in the hunt and be a bona fide playoff contented. Remember Rider fans, they lost four in a row last year, the fans thought the sky had caved in, and yet the Saskatchewan RoughRiders won the Grey Cup.
Can it happen again? I am thinking it can.
