Perhaps Jesus knew that as long as he was physically on the earth, he would be the primary preacher and the geographical focus with all res on him. So how could he work around that? Well he could designate more responsibility to his disciples and to his followers. Jesus wanted to enable them, as he does with us, to be teachers. He wanted not only for God to be with them but for God to be in them.
And as God began to live in these disciples, and in you and I, his message of salvation would go out to the entire world. They would have the knowledge and assurance that God would always be with them, helping them understand the scriptures and the mission they were to encounter.
You can almost see the astonishment in the disciples as Jesus rose into the air, leaving them behind, and was hidden behind a cloud and gone.
Acts 1:9 & 10
And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight.
As they strained to see him rising into heaven, two white-robed men suddenly stood among them
Two angels appeared and the disciples were assured that Jesus would return. They were not told when but told only to return to Jerusalem and wait for the gift that Jesus had promised.
Acts 1:4New International Version (NIV)
4 On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about.
The disciples really didn't understand what Jesus was talking about. Hence their question, will this be the time that you restore your Kingdom?
They didn't understand that they would play a part in the restoring the Kingdom of Heaven. And they like us didn't understand the time frame. They expected things to happen now.
They didn't understand that God was delegating responsibility from himself to them. They were the ones called to begin restoring the Kingdom of God, the same way as we are today. Christ's plan was always and still is for us to focus on the needs of other people and much, much less on ourselves.
His plan was that we should focus on the spiritual blessings he gives us and share them with others. We who have been given the gift and the power and the presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives should now share the good news of salvation with all people so that all people in all nations can become one in heaven in the Kingdom of God. Now it is our responsibility to delegate the responsibility he gave us from one generation to another until God's Kingdom is fully restored
